Physician User Tips For ScienceDirect | Journals Consult

This quick tips library will help you carry out many commonly performed tasks quickly and efficiently. Remember that within Journals Consult you can always use the Help and Search tips links at the top of every page to display context-relevant assistance, access FAQs or enter keywords to look for specific solutions.

 

Understand how to use Journals Consult

 How to register 
Take advantage of personalization features and alert services, whether you’re searching for specific information, articles or authors or just browsing. All you need to do is complete the easy one-time registration process. 
  • Click on Register at the top right of any page to create your personal profile.
  • The details you provide will create a customized homepage for you.
  • Use the Remember Me option so you don’t have to login every time you visit.

 How to seach for an article
Easily search for full-text documents with Quick Search or carry out more sophisticated searches guided by Advanced Search.
 
Quick Search
Using the handy search bar you can perform a quick search from almost anywhere in Journals Consult. You can search all fields or restrict your search to authors, journal titles or specific volumes and issues.
 
 
Advanced Search
Use the Advanced Search option for more highly targeted searches. Just click on Search in the main navigation bar to reach the Advanced Search form or use the link that appears in the top right on every screen.
 
 
You can use Boolean syntax like “and,” “or,” “not” to include or exclude terms.
 
The search form leads you through options available to increase the relevancy of your results. For example, you can search for keywords in All Fields or select specific fields in which you would like those terms to appear. If you want to search only for content to which your institution subscribes, then be sure to select Subscribed Journals in the Source pull down menu.
 
Click on the Search Tips link for instant access to a video tutorial as well as specific examples to help you fine tune your searches.
 
 
 How to search for an image 
Tip: While an image search returns only images, from the image search results list, you can click on an image to view the article in which it appears.
 
Quick Search
You can use Quick Search to find images such as figures, tables, photos and videos by clicking the images option. In the Images field, enter search terms related to the images you want to find. To narrow your search, enter a journal title and/or author name.
 
Advanced Search
Click Search on the navigation bar and then click the Images tab. Enter search terms related to the images you want to find. You can user Boolean syntax like “and,” “or,” “not” to include or exclude terms.

 How to manage search results 
The Search Results page lists documents that meet your search criteria, in order by relevance or date. Your search terms are highlighted in yellow in the results list. Search terms are also highlighted within the article you’re viewing.
 
You can set the number of search results you want to display in the list. Choose 25, 50, 100, or 200. You can sort results by date or relevancy. If your search returns 20 or fewer results and Journals Consult detects a potentially misspelled word, alternative spelling suggestions appear at the top of your search results list. Click a suggested spelling link to rerun your search using the alternative spelling. 
 
How to refine search results
You can refine your results by editing your search and searching within the results set. A navigation panel on the left of the screen allows you to search within and refine results by limiting or excluding using the following filters:
 
  • Content Type
  • Journal/Book Title
  • Topic
  • Year
How to download articles as PDFs
Document Download Manager, an extremely popular feature, enables you to download multiple files at the same time. On the results screen just select the documents you want and click on Download multiple PDFs. (JavaScript is required.)

 

 How to export citations 
You can easily export individual document citations or article lists to citation management programs such as Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote, or RefWorks. Just click on the Export citation link on the Results or Article pages.
 How to submit an article 
Elsevier Editorial System (EES)
Submit articles online using the Elsevier Editorial System (EES). It provides information about each journal, the submission standards, support information, etc. Find out more or email authorsupport@elsevier.com.
 
Alternatively from any journal title page within ScienceDirect click on the About this Journal link. This will take you to a page devoted to this title with links to detailed instructions regarding how to prepare your paper and submit a manuscript to Elsevier.
